We have made this list of 10 movies for the lovers who read us to get you in the mood. Grab your popcorn and lean into each other because it is going to be quite the adventure. Ding dong! There will be spoilers, but we promise to let out as few as possible.
From fifty shades of grey to killing me softly, the top movies in this article are a must-see for couples who want to get intimate and cozy in bed. Even better, many of these movies are available on Netflix.
1. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
Okay, we’ll be honest. For most men, this comes off as an absolute bore at first. But a few minutes in, we promise you will be thrilled by the jaw-dropping acting and storytelling.
(Women absolutely love Fifty Shades of Grey. In fact, everyone we asked agreed to love the movie.)
This movie is a romantic on-screen adaptation of the book Fifty Shades of Grey, written by E.L. James. It explores the complex, sexual, compelling, dynamic, and maybe even confusing relationship between a college graduate and a businessman.
Their relationship is quite the sadomasochistic kind, and one gets to see how pain and pleasure can be used as tools to deepen intimacy. There is little to no dull moment with this move: not surprising; it was the most-awarded movie at the 36th Golden Raspberry Awards.
If you love BDSM, we strongly recommend this movie.
2. Secretary (2002)
This may be one of the oldest films on this list of movies to get you in the mood. But one thing is for sure; it is quite the classic. You can’t expect any less from a movie in which Maggie Gyllenhaal stars.
She is Lee Holloway in this movie, who is trying to navigate her way through life, dealing with a number of emotional problems, and her parents mounting quite the pressure on her.
Eventually, she gets a job as a secretary to a demanding attorney, and from here, the adventure begins.
It feels like watching Fifty Shades of Grey, as the dynamic is almost the same. Kinky. Sadomasochistic. I will definitely recommend it if you love kinky movies. If you don’t, it may be the movie that gets you in the mood and brings spice into your sex lives.

3. 365 Days (2020)
Many describe this movie as soft-core pornography. We almost agree. It is the perfect movie for the mood, and even more perfect if you are trying to get in the mood. It earns a 75 percent rating on rotten tomatoes, meaning it isn’t a bad movie. It is great, just a bit too ‘erotica’ for some.
The plot is quite easy to wrap one’s head around: a man gets a woman to fall in love with him (and I mean head over heels) in 365 days. It is somewhat deeper than this, though, but remember, no spoilers.
What appeals the most is the acting. The actors do a great job with this movie: you feel everything: the sensuality, the romance, everything. No detail is left out.
You can find 365 on Netflix. In fact, it was one of the most-watched movies on Netflix shortly after its release. The perfect Netflix and chill.
If you are big on knowing the stars in a movie before seeing it, in 365 Days, both Anna-Maria Sielucka and Michele Morrone star. What better way to say—you are in safe hands. Good luck trying to keep your hands away from your partner’s shorts.
4. Killing Me Softly (2002)
The name says it all, doesn’t it? This 2002 movie makes it to this list because, on all accounts, it is a perfect movie to get you in the mood.
The story begins with a woman who leaves her boyfriend and chases sexual relations with another man.
The relationship is what I describe as a spark out of nothing. One second it is just basic, and the next, it is a wildfire.
I won’t say too much about this one because the story speaks for itself. Ah, and the casting is nearer to perfect than perfect itself.
5. Chemical Hearts (2020)
This is not an ‘average’ movie. A 59 percent rating on rotten tomatoes says it all. It may not be amongst the best out there, but we promise you, it is a perfect blend of romance and sex to get you in the mood.
This 2020 movie from Amazon studios features a teenager trying to experience love. (He has never felt it before). Like all protagonists, he has a strong passion. He wants to become a writer and editor.
I’ll leave out a chunk of detail here and skip to the end. He meets a girl he likes who, well, isn’t quite the girl anyone would gladly want to be with. But their romance cuts deep, and soon, they have sex.
A number of subplots sit pretty within this main plot.
A great movie if you are into high school romance and sexuality. The acting is perfect. The cast contains names like Austin Abrams and Sarah Jones.
(You may be bored by the first few minutes, but keep going, and you might be in tears before the movie ends.)

6. Blue is the Warmest Color (2013)
This movie is the bomb! Surprisingly, it has the highest tomato rating on this list, with a whopping 89 percent.
The movie is one that explores sexuality using powerful storytelling and cinematography.
The main character, Adele, had just broken up with her boyfriend and was trying to heal when she met a beautiful woman. The main conflict begins.
The relationship between both women deepens into something way deeper than it feels at first.
We have one piece of advice, though: pay attention to the plot twist. It takes you unawares. Nothing prepares you for it, even our telling you to watch out.
7. Along the Ride (2022)
With more than 57 percent rating on rotten tomatoes, we have another not average movie, only this one is newer and has been making quite the rounds on Netflix since its release.
Along the ride was directed by Sofia Alvarez, a playwright who does not deliver less. It is a movie adaptation of the movie, Along the Ride.
The plot is quite easy to wrap one’s head around (something most romance movies have in common, haha).
On Netflix, the movie’s description reads: “The summer before college, Auden meets the mysterious Eli, a fellow insomniac. While the seaside town of Colby sleeps, the two embark on a nighty quest to help Auden experience the fun, carefree teen life she never knew she wanted.”
You can already tell, can’t you? There is, obviously, going to be a lot of adventure and romance and a couple of scenes where you would have to check your eyes to see if tears have dropped.
Older audiences may not pretty much love this movie. We asked a couple what they thought of it, and they described it as one of those ‘teen vogue’ movies.
We hate to agree with them, though. We really do.
8. Poison Ivy (1992)
Strong characterization. Strong storytelling. Strong cinematography. Poison Ivy is an erotic thriller movie we strongly recommend. The plot is quite complex but still easy to understand.
It begins when Sylvie Cooper bumps into Ivy, killing a dog to save it from its misery. A few weeks after, Sylvie invites Ivy over.
They talk, and soon, the family gets involved. Then the action begins. With movies like this, it is not quite easy to expound the plot without dishing out too many spoilers.
9. Friends with Benefits (2011)
This 1 hr 45 min long movie almost stands toe to toe with Fifty Shades of Grey. Most people who love Fifty Shades of Grey agree to love Friends with Benefits, describing it as being near as romantic, just way funnier.
The plot is somewhat cliché: both main characters meet in New York City and decide to give sex a try while keeping things simple and ‘non-committed.’
How naïve they are. In a couple of weeks, they begin to catch feelings for each other and spend quite a while pretending that they don’t feel drawn to commit.
You sure are going to be impressed by the acting. Perfect cinematography here. Cuddle. Throw some popcorn in your mouth. Look at your partner. Laugh. It is all about the vibes of this movie.
The main character may annoy you, though, but he really is the sweetest ever. I have told too much already, haven’t I? I think I have. Now, go have fun.
Wait, the main character is Justin Timberlake. I especially love the music the producers choose, though. I’ll go now.

10. The In-between (2022)
This 2022 film is rated 64 percent on rotten tomatoes, making it way above average.
Many describe it as a movie for ‘young’ lovers, but we don’t quite agree.
The plot is amazing, and so is the acting. Everything starts to fall into place when Skylar dies in a car accident. The event that unfurls becomes the beginning of a true love story. Even telling you how the plot goes might get you in the mood.
Have fun. That’s it. Lean into your partner and have fun. Also, check out this article to learn just how you can add more spice to your sex life.
