How to Improve the Tone of Your Voice

by | Ideas

Sep 3, 2023

Your talking voice can be your charm. It can also be that one thing that takes people away from you. I know this for a fact and have seen women and men get awed from just listening to each other speak. Want to awe that woman or man with your voice? This is how to improve the tone of your talking voice:

1. Speak Slowly

People who rush their speech do not speak beautifully most of the time. This is because they rush their breathing. I will be talking about this in detail later.

Your breath has to stay properly controlled, or else you will be gasping for breath.

Gasping does not sound beautiful, not in the slightest.

When next you speak, speak slowly, and your vocal tone will improve. Do not slur your words as well.

2. Do Not Try to Sound Like Someone Else

This is a common mistake people make when they are trying to improve the tone of their voice. They pick out a celebrity, someone whom they admire, and begin to imitate that person.

No. Don’t do that. You are not improving the tone of your voice. You are only imitating someone else’s.

Sometimes, an imitation gets so noticeable that people turn to laughing at you.

I have heard someone being referred to as: “That guy who tries to sound like Idris Elba.”

Do you think anyone would feel attracted to such a person who has been labeled an imitator? This is very unlikely.

3. Don’t Drink So Much Cold Stuff

You should avoid cold if you are seeking that very toned stuff. This is because cold has an effect on almost every organ involved in speaking.

Your larynx, often called the voice box, houses the vocal cords and is responsible for sound production and modulation.

Your pharynx. It’s a muscular tube that plays a vital role in the respiratory system.

Cold has an effect on them.

Cold can irritate the pharynx, causing discomfort.

Usually, when exposed to cold, your larynx becomes a bit narrower. This shows up as coarse speech.

We all know that someone who almost always speaks as though he has a cold. He may not really have a cold. It is likely he is just constantly taking stuff that narrows his larynx.

4. Stop Taking Stuff That Irritate Your Throat

Top of the list is alcohol and tobacco. You should avoid everything that irritates your throat because it will, at the end of the day, affect how rich your voice sounds.

If you smoke a lot, it may be time to stop. Smoking causes carbon plaques to form along your airways. The same thing goes for alcohol.

Alcohol burns, literally. That sensation you feel in your larynx when alcohol goes down your throat. That is burning. It can make your voice sound very hoarse. It is no wonder people who drink a lot almost always have hoarse voices.

5. Have Your Allergies Taken Care Of

Allergies can irritate your throat and give your voice a bad timbre.

I know a couple of people who get allergies that make their voice totally sore for a long time.

If you happen to be one of these, it may help to get some antihistamines to help you.

Talk to your doctor about your symptoms and have him prescribe you some medication.

Alongside this medication, it will be helpful to avoid certain things your body reacts to. People who suffer from allergies owe it to themselves to be very watchful.

I have observed myself for years and know almost every single thing that gives me an allergy. Almost every single one.

If I enter a room and happen to get into a fit of sneezing there, I can point at everything that made me sneeze. You owe yourself that kind of carefulness if you want your voice tone improved.

6. Stay Hydrated

Water has an effect on every organ system of your body. Have you ever heard the term “patchy throat’? It is used to describe a throat that is not well hydrated. Usually, this makes one sound very hoarse.

The tone of your voice is not going to improve until you start to drink more water. The rule of thumb is to drink water whenever you feel thirsty.

If you do not feel thirsty that much and can’t depend on your feelings of thirst for direction, you could download an app that tracks and helps you drink more water.

These apps are truly helpful. The good thing about drinking more water is that it will end up improving your vocal tone and make you look healthier and better.

7. Gargle Salt Water at the Start of Your Day

I know what you are thinking: “Is this not too much sacrifice for just a good voice?”

Well, the truth is, nothing comes easy. So, you have got to do what you have got to do to see the beauty of your voice.

Gargle salt water in the morning. This can help clear your voice by dislodging any debris and bacteria that may have plagued your throat.

Let this be one of the first things you do when you wake up from sleep. Just gargle.

8. Practice Voicing

Yes, I know. It feels weird. But that is only because it is new to you. It isn’t new to people in the media, anyway. These guys have been practicing voicing for as long as you know.

Your TV presenters all do some practice with their voices, why shouldn’t you?

Practice proper pronunciation. Observe your voice and try to understand how it works. Observe your tone depth. To simply wrap this up, come to understand your voice.

Knowing your voice is going to help you tune it properly.

9. Practice Breath Control

You have to control your breathing if you want to improve the tone of your voice.

If you don’t, you will sound a lot like you are gasping. This is going to leave a bad taste on the people listening to you.

Take in a breath between sentences, and don’t take another until you have completed your sentences.

This is going to make you develop your tone of voice, and you will sound a lot better, for sure.

10. Speak Confidently

At the end of the day, your voice is supposed to command respect and admiration. If it does not, then something is wrong. You have to hike your confidence!

You can speak confidently. Count on that!
