Like many people, I freely admit to sometimes falling into the trap of these unconscious habits without knowing. Below, you will find some situations we experience in our day to day lives and how we sometimes react or respond to them unknowingly. These unconscious habits have become routine for us that, often, we don’t think about it. These habits are stored in a way that allows the brain to focus on other things. Check out the things you do unconsciously below and comment on which ones you are sometimes guilty of.
10 common unconscious habits you do unknowingly
1. When someone doesn’t wave back
When you wave at someone, and the person doesn’t wave back or acknowledge you. You unconsciously drop your hand slowly, land it on your head, give your head a little scratching, and then finally take your hand to your side. This unconscious habit can sometimes be embarrassing.
2. Feeling sleepy
When you are feeling sleepy in public places, depending on the person, some open their mouth unknowingly, while some unconsciously nod their head from time to time, and as soon as you open your eyes, you realize your position wasn’t so cool. You just hope no one was already watching.
3. Deep in thought
Sometimes you will be so deep in your thoughts that someone may tell you something, you will not answer immediately, until maybe about after some few seconds have passed and then you answer or ask the person to please repeat what he or she says.
4. Trying to remember something
Sometimes you may be trying so hard to remember a name or an event that happened some time ago or something you are very knowledgeable about. They just escaped from your mind all of a sudden; you will think so hard to remember the words or phrases but to no avail. Probably when you don’t need them anymore, they just creep back into your mind without effort all of a sudden.
5. When you are cooking
There are some foods you cook from time to time; you know when they are ready. Also, when to check on them while the food is still on the stove or oven, exactly when to add the appropriate ingredients, and when they are ready to be removed from the stove or oven and to be served without the food getting burnt. You just unconsciously knows when it’s time to do this or that even without timing yourself.
6. When you are talking to yourself
Sometimes we talk to ourselves, even whispering or mumbling words, making a conversation with ourselves like a dialog between 2 people, we ask a question and answer it. Suddenly we became aware of what we are doing and hoping nobody saw us, so they don’t think maybe we are mentally Ill or something and we may get a little worried because of this. Sometimes it can be very embarrassing to catch yourself talking, especially in public places for no reason. Sometimes you just need a little heart-to-heart with yourself or a little pep talk out loud.
Furthermore, it shouldn’t be any cause for concern, when you find yourself unconsciously talking to yourself. According to psychologist Linda Sapadin, talking out loud to yourself helps you validate important and difficult decisions. “It enables you to clarify your thoughts, tend to what’s important or urgent and firm up any decisions you’re contemplating
7. When you are singing
You find yourself unconsciously singing a particular song, you have no idea while you’re singing it. It just pops out of nowhere. This usually happens because you heard the same music playing a while ago. Maybe on the radio, CD player or someone sings it out loud. However, you do not remember the source of the music. Your mind just kind of response to it, and you start singing it before you realize you’re already singing. This is one of the most difficult unconscious habits to get control of. Sometimes, it could even take up to a couple of days, and you’re still nodding to it.
8. Cracking your knuckles
On many occasions, you find yourself cracking your neck or your knuckles, all 10 of your fingers, popping your joints to make some noise. You are already midway on it before you realize what you are doing, but you just keep doing it anyway, because it feels cool and is enjoyable. Don’t worry; you are not the only one doing that unconsciously.
9. Waking up in the morning
After waking up from sleep, you checked the time, and it was 6 am; you decided to relax a little, maybe for another 5mins and then you slept off. Next time you wake up, it is 7 am, so fast you don’t realize it. In some cases, you even set the alarm; after it rings, you put it off, and then you sleep again without realizing it. Sometimes it takes a great effort not to fall back to sleep.
10. Watching videos on social media
Another unconscious habit you do without knowing is, watching commercials, infomercials, or advertisements, Watching random videos that scroll across your feed, Watching an endless stream of YouTube videos, Reading Buzzfeed and other mindless entertainment. The more engaging the content, the more you’ll keep on watching. Before you know it, you have spent some valuable time you planned on using for other important things.
Conclusively, being guilty of these unconscious habits doesn’t mean you have a problem. They are totally normal. It happens to almost everyone. Additionally, another surprisingly powerful influence on what we do comes from environmental cues that unconsciously trigger behaviors without us realizing it. This is the behavior of others. Sometimes it can be quite contagious, and we can catch it through our daily contact with other people, and even through social media.
